   After studying at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, he was successively a professor of letters, journalist, film critic, and playwright. He made his film debut as an assistant to Abel Gance (1934 Napoléon Bonaparte / Napoléon / Napoléon Bonaparte, vu et entendu par Abel Gance) and co-wrote a few movies (1935 Le Roman d'un jeune Homme pauvre, as screenwriter, adapter, dialogist, Abel Gance; 1938 Gosse de Riche, as adapter, Maurice de Canonge; Capitaine Fracasse, as co-screenwriter, co-adapter, co-dialogist, Abel Gance; 1953 Les Amants de Tolède / Gli amanti di Toledo / El tirano de To­ledo / UK: Lovers ofToledo / USA: The Lovers ofToledo, as screenwriter, dialogist, France / Italy / Spain). He was married to actress Claire Mafféi (1919-2004).
