- (July 12, 1908, Saint-Malo, Ille-et-Vilaine, France - May 17, 1994, Paris, France)The son of a lawyer father, he intended to become a physician and spent some time in medical school before opting for an artistic career and moving to Paris, where he studied at the Beaux-Arts. He painted and worked as a production and costume designer with Alberto Cavalcanti, Jacques Feyder, and Jean Renoir. After meeting Charles Dullin, he became a pupil of the prestigious stage director and performer.
