Known as a dependable French technical adviser, he worked as an assistant director (1928 The Viking, Roy William Neill, USA; 1929 The Kiss, Jacques Feyder, USA) and technical director (1927 Seventh Heaven, Frank Borzage; 1928 The Lady of Victories, short, Roy William Neill, USA; 1930 Just Like Heaven, Roy William Neill, USA). Having returned to France in 1930, he wrote the screenplay and dialogue of Contre-Enquête (Jean Daumery) and directed eighteen shorts before shooting his first feature film.
