   Known mostly as a stage director, he played in a few films (1981 Die beierne Zeit / UK: Marianne andJuliane / USA: The German Sisters, Margarethe von Trotta, West Germany; 1993 L'Absence / Die Abwesenheit / La ausencia / USA: The Absence, Peter Handke, France / Germany / UK). Some of the plays and operas he directed were filmed (1989 Le Conte d'Hiver, Pierre Cavassilas; 1996 Don Carlos, Yves-André Hubert; 1997 Salomé, Hans Hulscher; 2001 Le Tour d'Ecrou, Vincent Bataillon; 2005 Hercules, Vincent Bataillon).
