Intending to become a painter and a sculptor, he studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. His love for movies led him to enroll in the IDHEC in 1946. He wrote musical reviews in Combat before landing a job as a trainee assistant director (1949 Occupe-toi d'Amélie, Claude Autant-Lara).
