- (May 2, 1873, Paris, France - April 5, 1949, Ain Temouchent, Algeria)Born into an artistic family (his father was an architect and his brother a painter), he earned a living as a traveling salesman in Algeria in the last years of the nineteenth century before becoming a parliamentary journalist and a polemist in 191I. Also a novelist, he turned a film director after World War II, notably adapting Michel Zévaco's popular novels and classics of French literature. He gave up cinema in 1927 to dedicate himself to writing (1930 Fille du Diable, un Roman d'Amour inédit). In 1934, he settled in Algeria, where he worked as a journalist and died at age seventy-five. He was formerly married to actress Germaine Rouer (1897-1994).
